New Delhi, Dec 27 (GW)Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, a towering figure in Indian politics and a globally respected economist, passed away on December 26 at the age of 92.
Dr. Singh was rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, at 8:06 p.m. in critical condition following a sudden loss of consciousness at his residence. According to an official AIIMS bulletin, “He was treated for age-related medical conditions and suffered a sudden loss of consciousness. Resuscitative measures were initiated immediately at home and continued upon arrival at AIIMS. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 p.m.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Dr. Singh, stating, “Rising from humble origins, Manmohan Singh rose to become a respected economist.”
Dr. Singh served as the 13th Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014 and played a pivotal role in steering India’s economic liberalization in the 1990s as the Finance Minister. Known for his integrity and dedication, he leaves behind a lasting legacy in Indian governance and economic policy.
He is survived by his wife, Gursharan Kaur, and their three daughters.
